For some time I’ve been hearing the screeching of a hungry baby bird and recently found out it was a baby magpie sitting in the gum tree in front of the house. The parents are regular visitors to our place and I think this is the third time they’ve had young ones. Previously there were always 2 babies, but this time around there seems to be only one. And boy, mum and dad are very protective of it. They’ve managed to scare off a bush turkey, goanna, and chased away the other regular bird visitors at our place (only the meat eating ones).
Here’s a few photos I managed to take of the baby magpie. It’s spreading and shaking its wings and flapping about, probably getting ready to fly soon. It’s a fluffy little puff ball, isn’t it?
Here is some footage I took of the baby preening.
And here is some footage of the baby magpie telling everyone it’s hungry again! You may need to turn the volume up for this one.
I think it won’t be too long now before mum and dad bring the baby to our place for a visit and to show off!
